Yes – that’s right - Decluttering can restore calm, order, clarity & wellbeing to our lives where we may previously have been feeling stressed or anxious.
REALLY? THAT’S INTERESTING. HOW DOES IT DO THAT?
It’s because our brains are programmed to naturally crave patterns and seek structure & order in everything we do. We learn from patterns & repetition and that gives us a sense of ease, familiarity, routine & consistency. So if you are living in a cluttered & disordered environment your brain will be working overtime trying to make sense of it all and create order.

Mess creates stress because clutter floods our minds with excessive stimuli (visual & tactile) causing our senses to work overtime trying to make sense of, or find patterns in things that are likely unimportant.
In a study by Princeton University, researchers found that a cluttered environment impedes our ability to focus. And when we find it difficult to focus, our mental faculties get worn down and frustration ensues, causing stress & tiredness. – it’s very draining. Also, the visual distraction of clutter increases cognitive overload and can reduce our working memory.
In addition, we can experience anxiety as the mind senses that it may not be able to find something important amongst the disarray.

Indeed!!!! So what happens when you declutter your space?
Answer - It improves your Mood! I know that it’s a kind of simple no-brainer, but it’s actually more complex than that.
Studies show that people experience a significant decrease in the stress hormone cortisol when unwanted or unneccessary items are removed, helping you to feel more stable, clearheaded, and relaxed as you clear.
By clearing & cutting down clutter in your home, work space & environment to only the items you genuinely want and use, you will help yourself feel calmer and less under pressure to complete a mountain of tasks. You’ll be genuinely able to relax as you won’t have that background programme running of “Things To Sort Out”!
CAN WE JUST STICK THINGS IN DRAWERS & CLOSETS IN ORDER TO HAVE AN APPEARANCE OF HARMONY & ORDER?
That’s not quite enough – obviously it’s going to have a lovely aesthetic visual effect when your environment appears clear & clean, however, you can’t fool your subconscious mind.

You’ll be in that same negative & repetitive holding pattern of “I must get rid of …”, “I must clear …”, “I don’t need ….”. It’s not positive energy and it keeps you repeating the same cycles. Chastising yourself with negative thoughts & words rather than positive, creative thoughts.
Additionally, it appears that the actual physical activity of clearing & cleaning coupled with the end result of a cleaner environment helps reduce stress, feelings of anxiety, and depressive symptoms.

Consider this – everything is energy - nothing is solid. This is not just the world according to Gillian Dalgliesh! This is in accordance with Quantum Physics. Albert Einstein said “Everything is energy, and you cannot ever destroy energy, but you can change it!” So if everything is energy, then nothing is solid, but with the 5 senses we possess, we cannot always ‘see’ that with our eyes, however we can ‘feel and perceive it’ with our senses. That’s where the magic comes in!!!
Consider that if everything is energy, then it must have an energetic frequency, which may be characterised as a vibration.
So everything in your home and work space & car is emitting an energy. The pictures you have on your walls, the furniture you have and even those piles of ironing, unanswered emails, and disorganised sock drawers are having an effect on you!
Actual objects, just like thoughts & ideas, have a vibrational energy that affect your state of mind! Therefore, emotional as well as physical space is affected by your possessions.
So think about all the things in your life that are just taking up space. Name some right now!!! What don’t you need that you’re simply allowing to share your space.
Decide what you can start, right now, to get rid of. Take control and start to evaluate what’s really important to you, what means something to you, what gives you happy thoughts, what brings value to your life.
There are things that may have previously brought joy to your life – if those things are now stale – then it’s time to let them go and allow them to bring joy to someone else’s life!
This process helps us to realise how little those material things really matter!
You’re giving yourself a sense of control, and space in your life for new things to enter. You’re giving yourself a sense of peace and clarity to focus on what is actually really important in your life and what you’d like to attract in. You’re so much more open to receive such, by being clear of clutter at every level – mental, physical & spiritual.
